Background of the study

Code switching, the alternation between languages within communication, is a prominent feature of Nigerian digital discourse. In online environments, platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook provide fertile ground for bilingual and multilingual interactions, where users fluidly switch between indigenous languages and English. This linguistic phenomenon is influenced by social identity, cultural context, and the specific affordances of each platform (Obi, 2023). WhatsApp group chats, characterized by real time, informal exchanges, often exhibit spontaneous and frequent code switching, whereas Facebook posts tend to reflect a more curated and public language use, incorporating deliberate language alternation to appeal to diverse audiences (Ibrahim, 2024). Such practices reflect the dynamic sociolinguistic landscape of Nigeria, where digital communication not only mirrors traditional multilingual practices but also catalyzes new forms of language use. This study investigates the patterns and motivations behind code switching in Nigerian online communication, aiming to understand how digital platforms shape bilingual discourse and contribute to language change in contemporary society (Emeka, 2025). The findings are expected to inform theories on digital bilingualism and offer insights into language policy and education in multilingual contexts.

Statement of the problem

Despite widespread code switching in Nigerian online interactions, research has not sufficiently compared its manifestation across different platforms. Existing studies typically focus on either WhatsApp or Facebook in isolation, leaving a gap in understanding how platform-specific factors influence code switching practices. This lack of comparative analysis limits our ability to develop comprehensive models that capture the sociolinguistic dynamics of digital bilingualism in Nigeria (Chinwe, 2023). Without detailed insights, educators and policymakers may struggle to address the linguistic needs of a multilingual population in digital contexts (Ibrahim, 2024). This study aims to bridge this gap by providing a focused examination of code switching on WhatsApp and Facebook.

Objectives of the study

1. To analyze code switching patterns on WhatsApp and Facebook among Nigerian users.

2. To identify sociolinguistic factors that drive these practices.

3. To compare the functions and outcomes of code switching across both platforms.

Research questions

1. What are the prevalent code switching patterns on WhatsApp versus Facebook?

2. What factors influence language alternation in these digital contexts?

3. How do these practices affect communication and identity formation?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it examines code switching practices across WhatsApp and Facebook in Nigerian digital communication, offering insights into multilingual digital discourse. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory and support the development of educational and policy strategies that accommodate multilingual online interactions (Obi, 2023; Emeka, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing code switching in Nigerian online communication on WhatsApp and Facebook, excluding other platforms and offline interactions.

Definitions of terms

• Code Switching: The alternation between languages in communication.

• Digital Bilingualism: The use of multiple languages in online discourse.

• Online Communication: Interaction through digital media platforms.
